Cardinals Set Out for a State Title

With a state title in mind, the 8-person Hoisington Cardinals team is giving it their all. one

Last year the Cardinals didn’t finish the season as they had hoped to, placing 18th overall, receiving a total of 33pts in the end. This year, however, they have come prepared. The Cardinals fill up eight of the fourteen weight classes with quality wrestlers. Before the semi-finals alone, they have already tallied up nearly double the amount of points that they had at last year’s state tournament in the end.

“Our goal all year long is to capture a state championship. We’ve been close twice in the last five years coming in second. We feel like this group has the ability to do that. We understand for that to happen, a little bit of luck will have to come into play this weekend, however, we sure like our chances. We have 5 in the semis and Norton [the returning state champions] have 5 in the semis. It’s all comes down to the effort and points gained from each and every match,” Coach Daniel Schmidt said.

The chemistry amongst the team is also something quite uncommon. They seem to have a real bond that most teams don’t. You can always spot every member that’s not on the mat, right on the sidelines cheering on the member who is on the mat. While they are skilled in working as a team, they are also practiced individually, possessing numerous goals and aspirations that they plan to achieve each season.

two“This is a very tight, close-knit team. We have a lot of good characters on it. It makes it really fun to coach. On the individual side, a lot of them are self-motivated. They have dreams and aspirations that have been with them for a long time and that is what drives them. Another thing [that motivates my wrestlers] is the concept that Hoisington has never captured a state championship in wrestling and in order for that to happen, we will have to come together as a team; that’s motivates all of us,” Coach Schmidt said.

Their 2017 team consists of the standout Ball brothers (Christopher and Jonathan). Senior Jonathan is so far undefeated (38-0) on the season and is ranked 2nd in 145lbs. Junior Christopher (35-2) is ranked 1st in 152lbs. Jonathan, unfortunately, had to take a year off last year due to injury, but is back and ready to contend. Christopher is a returning state champ who is hoping to have a repeat of his 2016 performance and even help Hoisington achieve a team championship while he’s at it

“I’m approaching it [the state tournament] the same way as I did my freshman year – to just go out and do my best, win or lose, good or bad. I also think we have a chance at a team title. We have five in the semi-finals which is a pretty good number to bring in some points. I think the two people Weston and Wyatt who got beat in the quarter-finals can still come back up the back-side of the bracket and contribute to a hopeful state title,” Christopher Ball said.
